In April, the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy celebrated a culmination of student research with its inaugural CSRD Student Fellows Colloquium. The Colloquium welcomed people across campus to learn from the 23 2018–19 graduate and undergraduate student fellows. Fellows completed independent research on issues that are central to the mission of the CSRD: race, democracy, mass incarceration, and voting rights and representation.
The graduate fellows produced a research brief series focused largely on voting rights, representation and criminal justice issues, which is now accessible on the CSRD's website. Fellows met monthly to plan research brief topics and peer-review each other’s work before publication on the site.

Undergraduate fellows produced a range of independent work, from research briefs and in-depth bibliographies to original performances, as well as a second phase of the Civil Rights in Burnt Orange video produced by CSRD students in spring 2018, which examines questions of race and desegregation at the University of Texas at Austin.
Video recordings and undergraduate research papers are also now live on the CSRD website, and will continue to be updated. Most of the undergraduate fellows enrolled in a new one-credit course (PA 159T) offered by CSRD Director Dr. Peniel Joseph to pursue their independent studies. Students met biweekly to discuss each other’s topics, brainstorm ideas, review relevant reports and research, and collaborate on their final projects.
Next year, the CSRD plans to grow the CSRD Fellows program. Applications for the 2019–20 year will reopen in September for interested graduate and undergraduate students. To learn more, contact csrd@austin.utexas.edu.
