Jacob Burks

2023 LBJ DC Fellow

Jacob Burks earned his Master of Global Policy Studies (DC Concentration) at the LBJ School. He majored in Business Analytics with a minor in National Security Studies at the University of Kansas. His undergraduate studies fostered an interest in international relations and national security while developing foundational skills in data science and business.
In graduate school, Burks focused on the intersection of economics and national security and how the United States can maintain the bedrock requirements of prosperity. He is particularly interested in economic warfare as it pertains to great power competition. Burks is also interested in how the U.S. can maintain strategic advantages in emerging technologies, foster mutually beneficial relationships with partners and allies, and maximize government resources.
Burks was a Graduate Teaching Assistant for Dr. Sheena Greitens’ Chinese Politics and Foreign Policy and Writing for Global Policy classes while in Austin. This experience sharpened his understanding of U.S. - PRC competition and how to research and write for policy impact. Combined with his previous experiences with the U.S. Commercial Service and U.S. House of Representatives, Burks is excited to play his role in formulating a whole-of-government approach to ensure America’s security against malign actors.
