On Monday, March 11, 2019, the Strauss Center is delighted to welcome Steve Coll, staff writer at The New Yorker and author, who will talk about "The Longest War: American Failures in Afghanistan and the Prospects for Peace." Coll, author of Ghost Wars and, most recently, Directorate S: The CIA and America's Secret Wars in Pakistan and Afghanistan, discusses why the United States has failed to achieve its goals in Afghanistan; why Pakistan nurtured the Taliban's revival; and whether the current peace talks have offer any prospects for success.This talk is part of the Brumley Speaker Series.
Coll is a staff writer at The New Yorker, the author of eight books of nonfiction, and a two-time winner of the Pulitzer Prize. He is Dean and Henry R. Luce Professor of Journalism at the Columbia Journalism School. Between 1985 and 2005, he was a reporter, foreign correspondent and senior editor at The Washington Post. There he covered Wall Street, served as the paper's South Asia correspondent in New Delhi, and was the Post's first international investigative correspondent, based in London. He served as managing editor of the Post between 1998 and 2004. The following year, he joined The New Yorker, where he has written on international politics, American politics and national security, intelligence controversies and the media.
