State of the Union in Numbers

Each year when Americans hear the State of the Union, regardless of the party of the president, it can be really hard to discern spin from fact. So, in this time of pandemic, what is the real state of the union IN NUMBERS? And, what do those numbers tell Americans, the shareholders of our government about our country?

On March 12 Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO and founder of USAFacts, discussed the 2021 State of the Union in Numbers report, a digital resource to give Americans a data-driven overview of the nation across many different barometers. This discussion was moderated by Dr. Victoria DeFrancesco Soto, assistant dean of civic engagement, LBJ School of Public Affairs.

Steve Ballmer

Steve Ballmer, former Microsoft CEO and current chairman of the Los Angeles Clippers basketball team, is the founder of USAFacts, the most comprehensive and understandable source available for data about our nation. USAFacts.org provides a nonpartisan, nonprofit, well-visualized look at data and trends in U.S. spending, revenue, demographics and policy outcomes — aimed at helping Americans ground our debates in facts. Along with his wife, Connie, Ballmer serves as co-founder of Ballmer Group, which supports efforts to improve economic mobility for children and families in the United States who are disproportionately likely to remain in poverty.

Ballmer became Microsoft's CEO in 2000, having served for 20 years in roles as president, senior vice president of sales and support, senior vice president of systems software and vice president of marketing. He was the company's first business manager. During his tenure at Microsoft, the company pioneered personal computing and democratized enterprise computing, growing from a small startup to a company, and by the time he retired in 2014, it had grown to almost $80 billion in revenue and was the third most profitable company in the United States. He remains a significant shareholder. The Ballmers have three sons and reside in Bellevue, Washington.
